PETERS, Rodney John

March 8, 1942 - April 19, 2018

Rod was born in Sussex, England and immigrated to Canada December 8, 1950 and lived in Brantford, Hamilton and Dundas, Ontario. He joined the RCAF Aug. 31, 1960 and became a financial clerk, a job he was very good at and loved doing. While stationed at RCAF Namao (Edmonton), he met and married Barbara Kaszuba and together they raised 2 beautiful daughters Darlene and Catherine.

During his career, the family was posted at Comox, BC, Gypsumville, Manitoba and North Bay, Ontario, where Rod served a tour of duty in Ismalia with the United Nations. He was then stationed in Trenton, Ontario and finally back to Comox, where he finally retired after 26 years. Rod joined the Reserves and served 3 years at HMCS Quadra.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, he took 5 cruises, travelling to Europe, Reno and Las Vegas. Rod purchased acreage and raised poultry, rabbits and had a great vegetable garden.

Rod was an avid 5 pin bowler, winning at both the Provincial and National level. Playing darts, different card games were some of his many pleasures.

Rod’s life changed in 2008 when he was diagnosed with a rare disease; Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy (PSP). He was a trooper, coping with it until he finally succumbed to it.

Rod will be lovingly remembered by Barbara, his wife of 53 years, daughters Darlene St. John, Catherine Peters, grandchildren Connor and Skylar St. John, sisters, Judith Taylor, Jennifer McAuley, brother David Peters and their families. Rod was predeceased by his parents Peter John and Joan Marjorie nee Drummond.

A sincere thank you to Dr. Lamykina, Dr. Hunter and the great staff at Comox Valley Seniors Village for the compassionate care they gave Rod for the last 3 years.

A Celebration of Life will take place at Comox Presbyterian Church, 725 Aspen Rd on Thursday, April 26 at 11:00 am with Rev. Ted Hicks officiating.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Eric Toneff.

From: Christopher Peters
Relation: Rod was my uncle.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of my Uncle Rod. A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts and minds. I personally will cherish my fond memories of Uncle Rod – like visiting him and Aunt Barbara in Kitchener and him showing me all of his amazing collections (coins, stamps, etc..). I will never forget the many family poker nights and the impressive home theater setup Uncle Rod had (the first person I ever saw with two TV’s side-by-side). I do wish we could have spent more time together because I feel we were kindred spirits. I want to express my most sincere condolences to the rest of the family, especially my Aunt Barbara, cousins Darlene and Cathy, my Dad (David), Aunt Judy and Aunt Jenny. I love you all, and I love you Uncle Rod.

From: Heather Wilson
Relation: Family friend

Barb, Cathy and Darlene, our family is sending love, light and healing hugs at this most difficult of times, know that we are thinking of you all and sending our love.

From: K. Young
Relation: I was his Care Aide till the end.

Condolences to the family & friends of a man whom I had the utmost pleasure & respect for as his Care Aide during his last years that he was a Resident at CVSV. It has been a blessing & an honour to know him, his beautiful wife & his beautiful daughters as well as meeting his Grandkids. Words can’t express how much he is missed by staff & others who knew him. The day I met him I knew that he was a remarkable man & his family was remarkable individuals in their respective rights. Rod to me wasn’t another Resident for me to care for. Him & Barb was like an extended Mom & Dad while Darlene & Catherine was extended family too. Together they was so much more too & for that I am grateful God blessed me with such a wonderful group of people & they allowed me to care for Rod. He will always be a part of me that I will carry thru my life & the rest of my career. Love & miss you Rod. You will always be my Strong one. ❤️

Relation: Friend and co worker.

Sorry to hear this shocking news. Rod and I spent a lot of time duck hunting back in he early eighties while we were stationed in Trenton. My wife and I also played some cards with him and Barb. Lost track of him over the years until my son advised me of the news he saw on Facebook with Cathy.
