MATTHEWS, Philip Robert

July 29, 1946 - February 14, 2018

Obituary

Surrounded by friends, family and live music, Phil Matthews finished his three year battle with cancer on the morning of Feb 14th, while strumming gently along on his ukulele.  We will never forget the sparkle in his eyes, his sense of humour and class, his beautiful singing voice, his unwavering love for his wife of 49 years, and the pride he took in his family.

Phil was a traveler and had a magical way with all people.  If you asked him how he came to have good friends in Arkansas, you would learn that he chatted them up at an ice-cream bar in Italy.

Phil was a hunter and fisherman, but also a gentleman, a romantic, a poet and a musician.  He could tie a fly, he could harmonize on any tune, and his foot never stopped tapping.  He was at home in the woods, floating on a lake, or gliding across a dance floor with his wife.

Beyond his loving support of his own kids, Phil is remembered as a kind and supportive coach, and was a founding member and great supporter of Sardis Kiwanis.

He leaves behind his wife, Patty, his daughter Julie (Jim), his son Cam (Summer), his grandchildren Hartley, Maisie, Ushuaia and Atigun, his sister Robyn (Richard), his nephews and nieces and too many friends to count.

A celebration of life will be held for his family and friends on Sunday April 15th 2-4pm at 888 Wing in Comox.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children’s Hospital or Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Eric Toneff.

From: Denny and Ghezlane Larochelle

Our deepest condolences to Patty and Family during this difficult time. We always admired Phil for his sense of humour, his story-telling gift and his love and zest for life. Whenever we get a ‘barky’ or a ‘sandy’ on the golf course or ‘muggins’ in a crib game, I will always think of Phil. He will be missed.

From: Terry and Colleen Bodman
Relation: Friend

Our deepest sympathy to Patty and family on the passing of Phil. We will always remember the camping, golfing and crib games we enjoyed. He was a mean bocci player and a keen curler. He also gave freely of his time for the community and his service to the Chilliwack/Vedder Cleanup Society was always appreciated.

Terry and Colleen.

From: Ron McGhie
Relation: BC Tel and CSO

My thoughts go out to Patty and family. I remember many coffees ( teas ) with Phil at Silvanos and other places in and around Agassiz while working with Phil at BC Tel ( Telus). Phil was Coin-Tel dept while I was the lowly C.O. person. Phil and his magic personality welcomed me into the Chilliwack area when I moved out there. If that was not enough of Phil we both ( along with Patty, of course,) ended up involved with the CSO ( Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra and Chorus ) He a singer in the Chorus and I playing Violin in the Orchestra and we both were on the Board of Directors for many years of the CSO. Phil had the gift of making you feel like you knew him for years even though one had just met him. I felt I knew his kids and grandkids by just listening to the stories he told of his adventures with them. I remember how Phil always referred to Patty as his Bride. I will think of Phil often, when playing music, when golfing using his fathers Clubs, when Cycling, when looking for a Coin Phone…
Again, my condolences to Patty and family. Phil will be missed. A true gentleman he was and is.

Ron McGhie
