CREAMER, Kathryn Anne

August 12, 1953 - January 29, 2018

Kathy was born in Toronto, Ontario and moved to the Comox Valley in 1968. She graduated at GP Vanier in 1971 and furthered her studies at St. Joseph’s in Victoria where she became a registered nurse in 1974. Her career began in Comox then took her to Edmonton, Victoria and finally brought her back to Comox for the last 31 years.

Those who knew her would describe her as cheerful, hardworking and chatty. She was always up for a good conversation and was a natural, nurturer, filled with motherly advice. Even acquaintances were put at ease by her familiar tone, knowing nod and overflowing kindness. With seemingly endless energy, she could easily facilitate a family dinner, care for a friend in need, or ease the anxiety of a stranger who found themselves in the middle of a stressful hospital stay. Her patients would ask for her by name and if the nurses couldn’t get an IV placed, they would ask “Where’s Kathy”?

Her nursing abilities overflowed into her personal world and those who knew her, regularly called on her expertise when a medical need arose. The need was always answered with a method or medicine or just a friendly, “big sister” like ear.

Though Kathy’s time here was cut short, and some dreams left unfulfilled, she fit so much good into her 64 years.

She is survived by so many people that were important to her but more to the point, those whom she was most important to. Kathy, you will be forever loved and surely missed by all who knew you.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Emma Rimell.

From: Gayle Watson
Relation: former co-worker

My sincerest sympathy to all Kathy’s family and friends. I left my position at the hospital the end of September and Kathy showed up on my last day with an afghan she had made for me. She did this for so many of her co-workers and said she had stayed up late the night before to ensure it was done on time for my last day. An example of how thoughtful and considerate Kathy was of others. Kathy was an inspiration, We shared many interesting conversations and times of great laughter. She always talked about her family and how important they all were to her. Kathy will be greatly missed.

From: Laura Lyle
Relation: I worked alongside Kathy at St. Joseph’s hospital

I loved working with you at St. Joe’s.
Nothing was a problem, always “doable” even if a huge sigh was heard before “of course we can do it”. Kathy was the Matriarch of surgical daycare / medical daycare. Kathy would take on students and new nurses and show them “the way” “the right, thorough and safest way” possible.
Always up for a good giggle with a patient, Kathy could say anything to a patient as long as there was a twinkle in her eye. “I saved the big, dull needle for you” was always welcome with a huge laugh between the patient and Kathy.
Kathy was a wonderful nurse – always keeping the unit running. She is irreplaceable.
I can’t help but feel it is now Kathy’s time to rest and let the rest of us nurses “take it from here” and make her proud!!!
It is funny, I also feel there Is a sense of “gentle reassurance” that Kathy is with all of us – in all our nursing decisions – watching over us. What could be better?
I love ya Kathy, we all do.
Now, time to put up those tired feet, have a drink and rest.
My life is forever changed because of you!
Much love, Laura

Relation: Patient with our dental practice

On behalf of our staff at Comox Avenue Dental Centre, we are sorry to learn of her passing. We will truly miss Kathryn. She was a very kind lady and a pleasure to take care of. Her family will be in our thoughts at this difficult time.

Relation: Former coworker, nursing sister

I’ve tried four or five times now to try to put to words the impact you had on my short time at St. Joes. I was the outsider, but as a casual, had many occasions to work in day care with you, Tammy, Patricia, Coral, Carol, Dianne, Chris and many others. It was clear, that Day Care was a well oiled machine that no one dare mess with especially on days you were there….which was most of them!!! Then my husband received his orders and we were posted back to Victoria. I will never forget the lovely gathering you organized at your home welcoming all of the day care staff to bid me farewell. Your kindness and generosity will never be forgotten. True to your spirit, you fought to the end. Rest in peace my friend.

From: Roberta Creamer
Relation: 2nd cousin

I had a dream last night that after all these years I should be contacting you or Dave, Kelly…
I’ll always remember the kind gestures you thought me as a teenager…..love to all, sincerely, Robbie (Roberta)
