EDGAR, Elizabeth Shirley

November 18, 1934 - July 28, 2018

Predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Red Edgar, and son David.

Shirley‘s love and generous spirit was limitless and unconditional.  She was a dedicated member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was the current serving president of her chapter.  She was a long serving employee of BC Tel (43 years) and until the last month of  her life she never missed a lunch and get together  with her BC Tel Colleagues, even though she had been retired for 24 years.  She was a committed member of St. George’s Church, serving on the fellowship committee and congregation care team, as well as an active member of the UCW, and a passionate volunteer in the soup kitchen.  Shirley also spent hundreds of hours visiting the elderly and ill at Glacier View Lodge and St Joseph’s Hospital.

When Shirley wasn’t sharing her spirit with the community she was giving her heart to her family and friends.  Shirley was the core of her large and extended family; the Edgar/Leathwood’s.  She and Red hosted countless barbeques, birthday parties, luncheons, holiday celebrations, and Sunday roast beef and Yorkshire pudding dinners.  Everyone was always welcome on Gartley Point Road.  No social gathering was too large for The Edgars to take on and host with beauty and grace.  Even when confronted with her illness, Shirley welcomed others into her home to share memories and stories.  In her final days she reminded us all every day that she “was the lucky one” because she “had been blessed” to have been “given such a beautiful family and incredible friends”.

Shirley was a long time Comox Valley resident and it will never be the same without her. Her presence will be missed by the community but her spirit will live eternally in all of us.  Shirley was an inspiration and a role model to many and reminded us all how to live a rich and full life with care, compassion, empathy and love.  In lieu of flowers, Shirley would love for us all to do something kind for a friend in her honour.  She would also remind us all to try not to get overwhelmed when life gets  tough as “this too shall pass”.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Susan (Tom) , her granddaughters Shea and Haley, and her chosen grandchildren Will and Molly,  as well as many supportive family members.

The family is extremely grateful and appreciative for all the immeasurable love and support from friends in the community far too numerous to mention.

A Celebration of Shirley’s Life will be held Saturday, August 25,2018 at Saint George’s Church in Courtenay at 2 pm.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Emma Rimell.

From: Patricia Jennifer Leathwood Dooley
Relation: She was my aunt.

I first met my Aunt Shirley as a baby and she has been an important part of my life ever since. She called me regularly, and spent a week with us when my dad was diagnosed with cancer, making dinners, spending time with him, and telling us how much her older brother Stan and his wife Shelagh, my mother, had done for her. My husband John, our children Erin, Shelagh and Sean have all enjoyed the incredible Gartley Bay hospitality, when happy hour began at 4:00 and oysters were often picked off the beach to cook. We can learn so much about love, generosity and service from Aunt Shirley’s life. She has made me a better person, and gave me the gift of my cousin Sue, Tom, and my chosen nieces, Shea and Haley. Aunt Shirley’s greatest legacy lies in the family she raised and influenced. RIP with my love, Pat

Shirley Edgar was a wonderful friend and a beacon of light — a truly caring and generous person who shared her light and love with others unconditionally. I always felt nurtured and peaceful in her presence or even on the phone. I will miss her forever and will honour her request to be kind to others.

We were very sorry to read of Shirley’s passing. We did not know Shirley well ourselves, but we certainly knew what a caring and kind friend she was to Brian’s uncle and aunt and cousin.
